If your Rollo feeds a blank label between prints, the printer has not learned the size of the labels you loaded. This almost always happens after you change your label type, size, or brand, and running the automatic label identification (calibration) fixes it.
Step 1: Run the Automatic Label Identification
1. Turn the printer off with the switch at the back.
2. If you have the USB Rollo, unplug the USB cable from the printer and the computer. This stops the computer from sending print jobs during calibration. You will reconnect it later.
3. Turn the printer back on and load at least 10 labels through the back of the printer, printable (peelable) side facing up. Do not calibrate with a single label.
4. Press and hold the circular button on top until you hear one beep, then let go. The labels move back and forth and stop at the tear-off point.
5. Once the light is green, press and hold the button again until you hear two beeps, then let go. A self-test page prints.
6. If the self-test looks good, reconnect the USB cable (wired printer) and print 5 copies of the sample label from rollo.com/sample. If all 5 print with no skipped label, you are set.
It is normal for the printer to feed a blank label or two during calibration. Remove those labels and feed them back in so they are not wasted.
Step 2: Match your print settings to the loaded labels
1. Check that the label size selected when you print (for example, 4x6) matches the roll that is actually loaded. A mismatch makes the printer push part of the print onto the next label and skip it.
2. If you designed your own label (for example in Rollo Designer), make sure the design fits inside a single label. Adjust the spacing in your template so nothing overlaps onto the next label.
Step 3: Check your label stock
1. Labels must be direct thermal. Scratch the surface with a fingernail. A dark mark means the label is direct thermal.
2. Transparent, very shiny, or very thin labels usually cannot be calibrated. The sensor cannot see the gaps, so the printer skips or feeds continuously. Switch to standard direct thermal labels of the same size.
3. If skipping started with a new pack of labels, test with a pack or brand that worked before. Bad batches happen.
Step 4: Clean the print head if labels catch or slip
If the printer clicks, slips, or drops parts of the print (like the barcode or address), clean the print head.
1. Turn the printer off, unplug the power adapter, open the cover, and let the print head cool.
2. Wipe the print head (the white metal strip) with a 70% isopropyl alcohol pad or a clean cloth, not water.
3. Press the print head down a few times and roll the roller in both directions.
4. Let everything dry for 2 to 3 minutes, then close the cover and print a test.
Platform settings
Calibration itself happens on the printer. These extra settings help if skipping continues.
Windows
1. Open Printers and Scanners, select the Rollo printer, then Printing Preferences, then Settings.
2. Check the Dotted Line box, then click Apply and Save. This helps the printer stop at the perforation.
3. In the same area, try lowering the Speed and Density (for example, both at 3) if labels catch mid-print.
Mac
1. In the print window, open Printer Options, then Printer Features.
2. Under Feature Sets, choose Page Options and set Dotted Line to True, then click OK.
3. Save this as a new Preset so it applies to future prints.
iOS and Android
There is no app setting for this. Run the calibration on the printer itself (Step 1), then print again from the Rollo app.
